Musical instruments resembling the guitar have been around for a minimum of 5,000 years. Figurines holding guitars have been found at excavation sites in various places over the globe. During the Renaissance, the gittern was the most popular type of guitar. The evolution of the classical guitar can be traced back to Spain, where the vihuela was developed in the early sixteenth century. The guitar continued to evolve during the Romantic and Classical periods. Today, the modern classical guitar is a combination of the lute, the vihuela, and the Renaissance five-string guitar.

There are more than you think of people who decided to learn to play classical guitar and then went on to become very famous.  Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), Fernando Sor (1778-1839), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909), Andrés Segovia (1893-1987), Julian Bream (1933), and John Williams (1941) were all famous musicians who made the decision to learn to play classical guitar. Can you think of anyone else? I'm sure you can.

Most classical guitars have six strings. However, if you decide you want to learn to play classical guitar, you will need to decide upon whether or not you want a multi stringed classical guitar. The difference between a multi stringed classical guitar and a regular classical guitar is that a multi stringed classical guitar usually has between seven to ten strings, as where a normal guitar has only six strings. The classical guitar is distinctive in that the treble strings are made from nylon, as where a normal string being made from metal. The benefit of nylon strings is that it allows for a striking and rich color palette.
